Located at the heart of the Rhône-Alpes region, Saint-Martin-d'Hères, with its 35 777 inhabitants, is the first city in the Isère administrative area. It is the second city in the urban area of Grenoble (400 000 inhabitants).
The city spreads over 926 hectares, 96 hectares of which are occupied by the University Campus.
The city is situated at the foothills of the Massif de Belledonne.
It has about ten parks and public gardens, 50 000 trees, a 212 hectares protected area of wood-covered hill called "colline du Mûrier", hiking trails, 10 km of cycling tracks, and the parks around the University Campus.
